Moxicip general information

What is Moxicip used for?

Moxicip tablets 400mg are used to treat bacterial infections caused by a range of bacteria that have not responded to treatment using other antibiotics. These include respiratory tract infections like bronchitis (acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis), community acquired pneumonia and acute sinusitis. Moxicip tablets 400mg are also used to treat uncomplicated pelvic inflammatory disease (infections of female upper genital tract, including salpingitis and endometritis). Some infections require intravenous treatment followed by oral treatment with Moxicip tablets 400mg. These include complicated skin and skin structure infections (including diabetic foot infections) and complicated intra-abdominal infections including polymicrobial infections such as abscesses.

How does Moxicip work?

Moxicip tablets 400mg contain moxifloxacin, an antibiotic that belongs to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics and is effective against a wide range of susceptible bacteria. Moxifloxacin in Moxicip tablets 400mg acts by inhibiting bacterial topoisomerases. These enzymes are involved in the unwinding of the DNA double helix, which is an important step needed for bacterial DNA replication, by creating breaks in the DNA structure. Once the DNA has been transcribed, repaired or replicated, topoisomerases help connect the DNA back together again allowing it to rewind or recombine into its helical structure. Moxifloxacin in Moxicip tablets 400mg kills the bacteria by preventing bacterial replication and thereby prevents spread of the bacteria. Since the antibacterial mechanism of Moxifloxacin in Moxicip tablets 400mg differs from most other regularly used antibiotics, it can be used for infections where antibiotic resistance causes problems with treatment.

What does Moxicip contain?

Moxicip tablets 400mg contain the active ingredient moxifloxacin hydrochloride, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. They also contain titanium dioxide and red oxide of iron.
