How does Agoprex tablets 25mg work?
The active ingredient Agomelatine is a compound that acts on melatoninergic (MT1 and MT2) and serotoninergic 5-HT2C receptors, introducing the concept of Melatonin Agonist and Selective Serotonin Antagonist (MASSA). By stimulating MT1 and MT2 receptors, it normalizes disrupted circadian rhythms and sleep-wake cycles without inhibiting serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine uptake like traditional antidepressants. Instead, it antagonizes the 5-HT2C receptor, which increases norepinephrine and dopamine levels in the frontal cortex, leading to antidepressant and anxiolytic effects, as well as increased slow-wave sleep. Agomelatine may also promote neurogenesis and have neuroprotective effects, enhancing its antidepressant properties. Clinical studies show rapid improvement in sleep disturbances and antidepressant effects within weeks of treatment, making it potentially effective for seasonal affective disorder, anxiety, and bipolar depression.
