Rybelsus general information

What is Rybelsus used for?

Rybelsus tablets help lower blood sugar levels by increasing insulin secretion and reducing glucagon production. They may also slow gastric emptying after meals, which can contribute to better blood sugar management. Additionally, while not specifically approved by the FDA for weight loss, Rybelsus has been shown in studies to aid in weight reduction. It is classified as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a class of medications that mimic the effects of the natural hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).

How does Rybelsus work?

Rybelsus helps manage blood sugar levels through several mechanisms:

1. Increases Insulin Release: Stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin in response to meals. Insulin helps lower blood sugar by allowing cells to absorb glucose from the bloodstream.

2. Reduces Glucagon Secretion: Decreases the production of glucagon, a hormone that raises blood sugar levels by signaling the liver to release stored glucose into the blood.

3. Slows Gastric Emptying: Delays the rate at which food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine. This can lead to a more gradual increase in blood sugar levels after eating.

4. Mimics GLP-1: As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Rybelsus mimics the effects of the naturally occurring hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which helps regulate blood sugar levels, promotes insulin secretion, and reduces appetite, potentially contributing to weight loss.

Can Rybelsus help with weight loss?

Rybelsus can aid in weight loss through several mechanisms:

1. Appetite Reduction: As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Rybelsus mimics the action of the natural hormone GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite and can lead to reduced hunger and calorie intake.

2. Delayed Gastric Emptying: Slows the rate at which food exits the stomach, increasing feelings of fullness and reducing the likelihood of overeating.

3. Improved Blood Sugar Control: Helps manage blood sugar levels more effectively, which can prevent insulin spikes and dips that often lead to increased cravings and overeating.

Although Rybelsus is not specifically approved by the FDA for weight management, these combined effects can result in weight loss. It is primarily used for controlling blood sugar levels in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

What does Rybelsus contain?

Rybelsus tablets contain the active ingredient semaglutide, used to lower blood sugar levels. They also include magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and salcaprozate sodium.

What are the side effects of Rybelsus?

Common side effects of Rybelsus tablets include: low blood sugar (in people with type 2 diabetes), upset stomach, heartburn, burping, gas, bloating, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, diarrhea, constipation, runny nose or sore throat, flu-like symptoms, headache, dizziness, and tiredness. If other side effects occur, contact your doctor for medical advice.

When should Rybelsus not be used?

Rybelsus should not be taken if you have:

1. A history of severe allergic reactions to semaglutide or any of its components.

2. A personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (a type of thyroid cancer).

3. Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2 (a genetic condition that can increase the risk of certain types of cancer).

4. Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Stop using Rybelsus at least 2 months before trying to conceive and consult your doctor for a safer alternative. Proper diabetes management and appropriate weight gain are important during pregnancy; avoid weight loss during pregnancy as it can harm the baby.

Additionally, Rybelsus should be used with caution in people with severe digestive system problems or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, unless advised otherwise by your doctor. Always consult your healthcare provider to determine if Rybelsus is appropriate for your specific medical condition.

What medications interact with Rybelsus?

Rybelsus (semaglutide) can interact with various medications, including:

1. Other diabetes medications: insulin, dulaglutide, exenatide, liraglutide, Byetta, Trulicity, Victoza, and similar drugs.

2. Prescription medications: Various prescription drugs may interact with Rybelsus, affecting its efficacy or increasing the risk of side effects.

3. Over-the-counter medications: Some OTC medications may interact with Rybelsus.

4. Vitamins and herbal products: Certain vitamins and herbal supplements might also interact with Rybelsus.

Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking to manage potential interactions effectively.

How should Rybelsus be taken?

Take Rybelsus as prescribed by your doctor, starting with a low dose and gradually increasing as directed. Take the tablet once daily in the morning, at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking, with a small amount of water. Swallow it whole and do not crush or chew it. After 30 minutes, you can eat, drink, or take other medications.

Take one tablet daily. Each pack contains 10 tablets, so we sell 3 packs for a 30 day supply, 6 packs for a 60 day supply and 9 packs for a 90 day supply.

Avoid using different brands of semaglutide together. Monitor for symptoms of low blood sugar (e.g., hunger, dizziness) and treat with sugary foods or drinks if needed; severe cases may require a glucagon injection. Report any frequent high blood sugar symptoms to your doctor and consult them before changing your dosage. Maintain your treatment plan, including diet and exercise, and contact your doctor if you experience dehydration or illness-related issues.

How long should Rybelsus be taken?

You should continue to take your Rybelsus tablets for as long as recommended by your doctor, as they will help maintain your blood sugar levels but will not cure your diabetes.

Missed dose of Rybelsus?

If you missed a dose of Rybelsus skip the missed dose and use your next dose at the regular time. Do not take a double dose.

How should Rybelsus be stored?

Store Rybelsus tablets in the original package at temperatures below 25°C (77°F) in a cool, dry place. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
