Metaspray general information
What is Metaspray used for?
Metaspray 0.05% is a nasal spray used for the treatment and prevention of allergic rhinitis caused by seasonal allergy to pollen, also known as hay fever, and perennial allergy to year-round allergens such as animal fur, mould and house dust mites. Metaspray nasal spray 0.05% relieves nasal symptoms of allergic rhinitis including nasal congestion, runny itchy nose and sneezing. Metaspray 0.05% nasal spray is also used to treat nasal polyps, which are growths in the nose that often develop at the same time as allergic rhinitis and are thought to be caused by the allergy.
How does Metaspray work?
Metaspray 0.05% is a nasal spray that contains the mometasone, a potent topical corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory properties at doses that are not active systemically. Mometasone in Metaspray 0.05% inhibits the release of inflammatory chemicals, like prostaglandins and leukotrienes from leucocytes, which are white blood cells recruited to sites of inflammation and allergy. This action controls local inflammation in the nasal passages caused by an allergic reaction to allergens like pollen or house dust mite and reduces signs of inflammation, such as mucus production, swelling and irritation, which helps relieve symptoms including runny itchy nose, nasal congestion and sneezing. Mometasone nasal spray also slows down the growth of nasal polyps and helps relieve nasal congestion caused by the polyps.
What does Metaspray contain?
Metaspray nasal spray contains the active ingredient mometasone furoate 0.05% (w/v), a potent corticosteroid and anti-inflammatory used to prevent and treat allergic rhinitis. It also contains Benzalkonium Chloride 0.01% and Phenyl Ethyl Alcohol 0.25% as preservatives. Metaspray nasal spray is supplied as a metered dose spray pump and each actuation (metered spray) delivers 50mcg mometasone furoate into the nasal passages; each bottle of Nasonex nasal spray contains 10 doses.
