Daktarin general information

What is Daktarin used for?

Daktarin oral gel is used to treat fungal infections in the mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract, such as oral candidiasis (thrush) caused by the yeast candida; as well as to prevent spread of infection. Daktarin oral gel is also effective against certain bacteria that may have infected the mouth and throat. It can be used in children over 4 months old.

How does Daktarin work?

Daktarin oral gel contains miconazole 2%, an antifungal drug, belonging to the imidazole group of antifungals. Miconazole in Daktarin oral gel is absorbed through the skin in your mouth as well as by the fungus growing on the mucosal membranes, and kills the fungus by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells. Daktarin oral gel 2% weakens the fungal cell membrane, causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus, preventing the infection from spreading and relieving symptoms caused by the infection, such as rash, itching, scaling and inflammation. Miconazole in Daktarin oral gel also has antibacterial action and kills certain bacteria that can cause infection in area already infected by the yeast candida.

What does Daktarin contain?

Daktarin oral gel contains miconazole 2%, an antifungal drug that is used to treat and prevent fungal infections in the mouth and throat. It also contains: pregelatinised potato starch, polysorbate 20, sodium saccharin, purified water, alcohol, cocoa flavour, orange flavour, glycerol.

Treating oral thrush with Daktarin

Daktarin oral gel contains miconazole 2%, an antifungal drug is used to treat fungal infections like oral thrush (candidiasis), caused by the yeast candida, which appears a thick white or cream-coloured deposit on the mucosal membranes of the mouth, tongue and throat. Daktarin oral gel is absorbed through the skin in your mouth as well as by the fungus growing on the mucosal membranes, and weakens the fungal cell membrane, causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus, preventing the infection from spreading and relieving symptoms caused by the infection, such as itching, discomfort, and inflammation.

What are the side effects of Daktarin?

Topical treatment with Daktarin oral gel is generally well tolerated. The most common reported side effects are a burning sensation, irritation or a rash where the Daktarin oral gel has been applied. Less common side effects include nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

When should Daktarin not be used?

You should not use Daktarin if you:
  • are allergic to miconazole or any ingredients in Daktarin oral gel
  • are pregnant or breastfeeding without discussion with your doctor
  • have liver disease
  • are taking medications that may interact with Daktarin oral gel, including: anticoagulants like warfarin, terfenadine, mizolastine or astemizole for allergy, statins for lowering cholesterol, like simvastatin and lovastatin, the antipsychotics pimozide and sertindole, antiarrhythmic drugs for irregular heat beats like quinidine, cisapride for gastric reflux, ergot alkaloids like ergotamine or methysergide for migraine, the sedative triazolam

How should Daktarin be used?

You should apply Daktarin oral gel to the affected area by rubbing gently with a clean finger, 4 times daily, after meals. Keep the gel in contact with the infected area for as long as possible. Use the measuring spoon supplied to measure out each dose before applying. The recommended dose is 15-20mg per kg body weight per day, which is:
  • 1-2 spoonfuls (5-10ml) of gel four times per day for adults
  • 1 spoonful (5ml) of gel four times per day for children over 6 years
  • 1 spoonful (5ml) of gel twice per day for children under 6 years
You should continue applying Daktarin oral gel for 2 days until symptoms have cleared; if symptoms persist you should consult your doctor.

How long should you take Daktarin?

You should continue applying Daktarin oral gel for 2 days until symptoms have cleared, if symptoms persist you should consult your doctor.

Missed dose of Daktarin

If you miss a dose of Daktarin oral gel take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.

How should Daktarin be stored?

You should store your Daktarin oral gel in a cool dry place below 30°C.
