What is Resteclin used for?
Resteclin capsules 500mg are a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in various parts of the body. Conditions that Resteclin 500 is used for include: ear, nose and throat infections; respiratory infections like acute bronchitis as well as prophylaxis of chronic bronchitis; gastrointestinal infections like intestinal amoebiasis (a parasitic infection) in conjunction with other medication; urinary tract infections; sexually transmitted diseases like non-gonococcal urethritis due to chlamydia infection, and other chlamydial infections such as trachoma, a chlamydial infection of the eye; and soft tissue infections. Resteclin capsules 500mg are also used to treat severe acne, where bacterial infection with Propionibacterium acnes has developed. Resteclin 500 is also used to treat infection with Rickettsiae, which is a bacteria transmitted by ticks and lice and causes infections like rocky mountain spotted fever and typhus fever.
How does Resteclin work?
Resteclin capsules 500mg contain tetracycline, which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the tetracycline group of antibiotics, with antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria, including Rickettsiae, Chlamydia, Streptococcus, Haemophilus, Klebsiella, Mycoplasma. Tetracycline in Resteclin 500 inhibits protein synthesis in susceptible bacteria by blocking the transcription stage, which is reading the protein message from the bacterial RNA. This action prevents the bacteria from producing essential proteins needed for growth, repair and replication and prevents the spread of infection.

What are the side effects of Resteclin?
The most commonly reported side effects when taking Resteclin capsules 500mg include diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, headache. Other side effects include staining of the teeth and overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms causing vaginal and oral thrush.
When should Resteclin not be used?
You should not use Resteclin capsules 500mg if you:
- are allergic to tetracycline or other tetracycline antibiotics like or any ingredients in Resteclin
- are pregnant or are breastfeeding
- have kidney or liver disease
- are taking antacids or supplements that contain iron, calcium, magnesium, aluminium or zinc salts preparations, which may reduce the absorption (should be taken1 or 2 hours after)
- are taking oral contraceptive as breakthrough bleeding may cause contraception failure
- are taking medicines that interact with Resteclin including penicillin antibiotics, barbiturates, phenytoin for epilepsy, the anticoagulant warfarin, retinoids like tretinoin for acne, lithium for mood disorders, digoxin for heart conditions, ergotamine for migraines, antacids for indigestion strontium ranelate for osteoporosis
What medications interact with Resteclin?
Several medications interact with Resteclin capsules 500mg and should either not be taken while you are taking Resteclin or only after discussion and instruction from your doctor:
- Drugs that cause a serious reaction with Resteclin: retinoids like tretinoin for acne
- Drugs that affect Resteclin: ergotamine for migraines, strontium ranelate for osteoporosis
- Drugs that are affected by Resteclin: the anticoagulant warfarin, lithium for mood disorders, digoxin for heart conditions,
How should Resteclin be taken?
You should take your Resteclin capsules 500mg swallowed whole with a glass of water 1-2 hours before food, as food, particularly dairy foods will reduce absorption. You should take your Resteclin 500 usually every 6 hours for several weeks or months, depending on what you are being treated for and the severity of your condition. The dose you take should be as recommended by your doctor. You should continue to take your Resteclin capsules 500mg for as long as recommended by your doctor and for at least 3 days after symptoms have disappeared.

Missed dose of Resteclin
If you miss a dose of Resteclin capsules 500mg take it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to take the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.
How should Resteclin be stored?
You should store your Resteclin capsules 500mg below 25°C in a cool dry place.
