What is Marbomet used for?
Marbomet tablets 50mg are a veterinary-specific antibiotic medication used to treat most common bacterial infections in dogs in various parts of the body, caused by a wide range of susceptible bacteria. Marbomet tablets 50mg are most commonly used for skin and soft tissue infections, including superficial skin infections (pyodermas), wounds and abscesses; also, secondary wound infections. Marbomet tablets 50mg are also used for urinary tract infections. Marbomet tablets at a dose of 50mg should only be used for dogs; a lower dose is required for cats.
How does Marbomet work?
Marbomet tablets 50mg contain marbofloxacin that belongs to the fluoroquinolones group of antibiotics and is a synthetic broad spectrum antibiotic with antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria including pseudomonas, staphylococcus, haemophilus, Enterobacter and E. coli. Marbofloxacin in Marbomet tablets 50mg works by inhibiting specific bacterial enzymes (bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase) needed for the bacteria to replicate and repair its DNA. This action of marbofloxacin in Marbomet tablets 50mg blocks bacterial growth and prevents the spread of infection. Marbomet tablets 50mg are fast acting with long lasting effect, which enables once-daily dosing.

Treating bacterial infection with Marbomet
Marbomet tablets 50mg contain marbofloxacin a broad spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic, used to treat most common bacterial infections in dogs, including skin and soft tissue infections, secondary wound infections, and urinary tract infections. What are the side effects of Marbomet?
The most commonly reported side effects when taking Marbomet tablets 50mg include nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, diarrhoea and lethargy. Convulsions or seizures are a rare side effect in pets with CNS disorders.
When should Marbomet not be used?
You should not give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog if:
- Your dog is allergic to marbofloxacin or any ingredients in Marbomet
- your dog is pregnant or are lactating
- your dog is less than one year of age, large breeds of dog with a longer growth period under 18 months of age), as articular cartilage may be affected during the period of rapid growth
- your dog has kidney or liver disease or a central nervous system disorder
- your dog is taking medicines that interacts with Marbomet including sucralfate for stomach ulcers, antacids for indigestion, and mineral supplements that may reduce absorption of Marbomet, theophylline for respiratory problems may be affected by Marbomet.
How should Marbomet be taken?
You should give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog once daily with or without food, preferably at the same time each day. The dose you give should be 2.75 mg/kg (1.25 mg/lb) based on the body weight of your dog. Your veterinary professional may increase this to 5.5mg/kg (2.5 mg/lb). You should continue to give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog for as long as recommended by your veterinary professional. For skin infections should give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog 2-3 days after symptoms have gone for a maximum of 30 days. For urinary tract infections you should give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog for up to 10 days but discontinue if there is no improvement after 5 days.
Doseage
You should give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog according to the following dosing chart:
- 9kg (20lb) half 50mg tablet
- 18kg (40lb) one 50mg tablet
- 36kg (80lb) two 50mg tablets
How long should you give Marbomet?
You should continue to give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog for as long as recommended by your veterinary professional. For skin infections should give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog 2-3 days after symptoms have gone for a maximum of 30 days. For urinary tract infections you should give Marbomet tablets 50mg to your dog for up to 10 days but discontinue if there is no improvement after 5 days.
Missed dose of Marbomet
If you miss a dose of Marbomet tablets 50mg give it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to give the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not give a double dose.
How should Marbomet be stored?
You should store your Marbomet tablets 50mg below 30°C in a cool dry place.
