Pomisol Ear Drops general information
What is Pomisol Ear Drops used for?
Pomisol Ear Drops are a combination medication used as a topical treatment for chronic and acute otitis externa in dogs; also, to prevent acute exacerbations of recurrent otitis externa. Otitis externa is an infection of the outer ear that is caused by fungi and/or bacteria. Pomisol Ear Drops are also effective for treating inflammation that is caused by the infection and helps relieve symptoms including itching, discomfort, redness and swelling. Acute otitis externa can be extremely painful for dogs and Pomisol Ear Drops helps relieve the pain by numbing the area around the infection.
How does Pomisol Ear Drops work?
Pomisol Ear Drops contain a combination of three topical medications used together to treat otitis externa in dogs. Ofloxacin in Pomisol Ear Drops is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and is effective against a wide range of susceptible bacteria that can cause ear infection in dogs, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, enterococcus faecalis and coagulase positive staphylococci. It works by inhibiting the DNA topoisomerase II (DNA-gyrase) and DNA topoisomerase IV enzymes that are needed for the synthesis of bacterial DNA, which prevents bacterial replication and kills the bacteria. Clotrimazole in Pomisol Ear Drops is a broad spectrum antifungal used to treat fungal infections of the skin. It is effective against the yeast Malassezia pachydermatis (formerly Pityrosporum canis) that causes ear infections in dogs; also against Candida that causes yeast infections and Tinea that causes ringworm. Clotrimazole in Pomisol Ear Drops works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells. This weakens the fungal cell membrane causing the cell contents to leak out killing the fungus. Betamethasone in Pomisol Ear Drops is synthetic corticosteroid, with anti-inflammatory and anti-pruritic activity that works by blocking the production of inflammatory chemicals like prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Pomisol Ear Drops also contain lignocaine, a fast-acting local anaesthetic. Lignocaine in Pomisol Ear Drops works by acting as a nerve block and numbing the local area of application. The combination of components in Pomisol Ear Drops work together to fight the infection that causes otitis; they also help relieve symptoms of inflammation caused by the infection and reduce the sensations of pain and itching.
