TMP general information
What is TMP used for?
TMP tablets 300mg (also known as Proloprim and Trimpex) are used to treat acute urinary tract infections, such as cystitis, caused by certain bacteria, and for long term prophylaxis (prevention) of recurrent chronic urinary tract infection. They are also used to suppress bacterial infections following sterilisation of the urine. TMP 30 can be used alone as monotherapy or in combination with other antibiotics to treat other infections such as pneumonia.
How does TMP work?
TMP tablets 300mg (also known as Proloprim and Trimpex) contain trimethoprim, a synthetic antibiotic with antibacterial activity against a wide range of bacteria, including Staphylococcus species, Enterobacter species Escherichia coli Klebsiella pneumoniae and Proteus mirabilis. Trimethoprim in TMP 300 blocks bacterial folate biosynthesis, needed for biosynthesis of nucleic acids and proteins, by inhibiting a specific bacterial enzyme called dihydrofolate reductase which blocks the conversion of dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid. This action prevents replication of the bacteria stops the spread of infection.
