What is Daktarin used for?
Daktarin cream 2% is used to treat athlete's foot or tinea pedis, which is a fungal infection of the toes and foot caused by the yeast candida. Symptoms of athlete’s foot, named because it is common in people active in sport, include red, inflamed and itchy skin and if the fungus spreads between the toes, it causes the skin to become cracked and peeling which can make the skin raw and painful. Daktarin cream 2% helps relieve symptoms of athlete's foot and prevent the spread of infection.
How does Daktarin work?
Daktarin cream contains miconazole, an antifungal drug, belonging to the imidazole group of antifungals. Miconazole in Daktarin cream is absorbed through the skin and kills the fungus by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, an important component of fungal cell membrane that is not found in animal cells. Daktarin cream 2% weakens the fungal cell membrane, causing the cell contents to leak out, which kills the fungus, preventing the infection from spreading and relieving symptoms caused by the infection, such as rash, itching, scaling and inflammation.
What does Daktarin contain?
Daktarin cream contains miconazole nitrate 20mg/g, an antifungal drug that is used to treat and prevent fungal infections of the foot and toes known as athlete’s foot. It also contains: PEG-6, PEG-32 and glycol stearate, oleoyl macroglycerides, liquid paraffin, benzoic acid butylated hydroxyanisole, purified water.

The most commonly reported side effects are a burning sensation, irritation or a rash where the Daktarin cream has been applied.
When should Daktarin not be used?
You should not use Daktarin if you:
- are allergic to miconazole or any ingredients in Daktarin cream
- are pregnant or breastfeeding, without discussion with your doctor
- are taking anticoagulants like warfarin that be affected by Daktarin
How should Daktarin be used?
You should apply Daktarin cream to the affected area twice daily, morning and evening. Rub in gently with a clean finger. Wash your hands to prevent spreading the infection and do not get the cream into your eyes. You should continue applying Daktarin cream for 10 days until symptoms have cleared.

Missed dose of Daktarin
If you miss a dose of Daktarin oral cream apply it as soon as you remember, unless it is time to apply the next dose, then skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose.

You should store your Daktarin oral cream in a cool dry place below 25°C.
