Clavpet general information
What is Clavpet used for?
Clavpet tablets 500mg are a combination veterinary antibiotic used for short-term treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections commonly found in cats and dogs. These include skin disease, such as deep and superficial pyodermas, which are infections of the skin where bacteria have entered a cut, or a wound causing symptoms like itching, pustules (inflamed pus filled swelling), hair loss, raised lesions, dried discharge. Clavpet 500 is also used to treat urinary tract infections, upper and lower respiratory tract infection, and enteritis (inflammation of the small intestine).
How does Clavpet work?
Clavpet tablets 500mg contain a combination of two antibiotics. Amoxycillin is as an antibiotic similar to penicillin and belongs to the beta-lactam group of antibiotics, which block the formation of the bacterial cell wall and this kills the bacteria. However, amoxycillin can be inactivated by the bacterial enzyme beta-lactamase that makes certain bacteria resistant to amoxycillin. Clavulanic acid is an antibiotic structurally related to the penicillins that is able to inactivate a wide range of beta-lactamase enzymes commonly found in amoxycillin-resistant bacteria. This dual action of Clavpet tablets provides a broad spectrum antibiotic and a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which extends the range of susceptible bacteria. Clavpet 500 is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including susceptible Staphylococci, Streptococci and Escherichia coli, and is used to treat infections common to cats and dogs caused by these bacteria.
